John Graham Altman Might Not Be Too Bright
I don't think Rep. John Graham Altman (South Carolina) is very bright.
It isn't about making cockfighting a felony. Any fool in government can do that, and we sure have a bunch of those. It isn't even about on the same day tableing a piece of legislation making domestic violence a felony.
It is about the belief that a woman who is abused by a man can in every case just walk away the first time it happens and never look back. But don't take my word for it. This article has an abundance of his ignorance in the form of quotes.
Here's an example of one of his gems of wisdom.
"It's not the woman's fault, it's not blaming the victim, but tell me what self respecting person is going back around someone who beats them?"
It was so amazingly shocking that I had to look around to make sure the news site wasn't a misinformation site.
I guess ignorance really is bliss.

*completely sarcastic* thank god the women South Carolina has John Graham Altman - the drunken looking/acting (watch the video - you'll see what I mean) crusty old man whose mentality is a flash back to the 30s to look after them! They can count on him to tell them "don't go back to the man abusing you" because "no self respecting person would do that"
Hello! Dumbfuck! That's the whole freakin' problem! That's why some of them need these protections - they don't have self respect - its been torn away from them! The others can't leave because there trapped in one way or another.
What an ass.

Just like a woman to go flying off the handle (snicker hehehe). Ok I'll get you a beer next visit Sara :)
I really wish I didn't hate politics so much, so that I could run for senate and not be stuipd. I'm so tired of politicians ruining America one bill at a time.

I'm emailing my mother-in-law, who lives in SC. Her stepson (Russ' stepbrother) used to be a State House Representative (R) a few years back. And, he's still very involved in the political process in SC. Granted, he is a Republican - but at least I'm pretty sure he's got more sense than this!!! This is insane.
A man I know said once that he didn't understand about why we women placed so much significance on being "a woman". He thought the women's movement was over and we should just move on. After all, we're all equal now, right? Why we talk about it, go to conferences, read books and magazines, band together, complain, he just couldn't understand. Well...I think this is just ONE REALLY GOOD REASON as to why we women still have a right to be concerned!!!

*sarcasm* Yeah, we should just get over it, afterall, we're equal now, right? Then give me my fucking other 24 cents per dollar, and while your at it - move the damn glass ceilings. Thank you.

And just to clarify - that wasn't directed at you Leslie, that was just directed at asshats you were referring to.

But I thought the glass ceiling was there to protect us from monsters!

Hey..
Yeah, I figured that's who you meant it for. :) Give 'em h*ll, Sara!
Woody, that glass ceiling wasn't to protect us from the monsters - but rather the mosters from us! :)

Sorry...just one more comment to add. I was reading the article and listening to the full news story. I just can't believe that under current SC law, domestic violence of any kind (unless death results) is a misdemeaner and is only punishible by a maximum of 30 DAYS! No wonder my co-worker (who was recently killed by her husband) never got a restraining order or called the police on him - what good was it going to do except make him more mad and dangerous.
Wonder what it is in NC?

You go Leslie! How true that is!! Having been abused myself, (long ago and far away - I broke the cycle :) I KNOW that the police rarely help when called, and knowing that NOTHING will happen to the abuser....why bother? You are RIGHT - he will be more angry and the beatings worse!!
By the way.....why should the abused person LEAVE????????????? They didn't do a thing!! It shouldn't be a matter of not going "back" - the abuser should be removed, restrained, and RE-TRAINED!

Alman asks why would anyone return to an abuser? Well, why don't we ask the chicken? After all, the ones who train cocks to fight probably also feed and house them, right?

I'm coming to this late, I know, but he is retiring from the House (he knows he will not be re-elected after that pop her again statement) so now he's running for the School Board.
I spoke at a press conference as a treater od CDV victims in front of his house when this whole incident occurred and will be gleefully campaigning for whoever runs against him!
