Carolina Phoenix VS Carolina Queens (again)

Its hot in the Queen City, and I don't just mean the rematch between two very well matched and high caliber teams. The Sun is beating down at West Charlotte High School.

Last time these two teams met, the Phoenix won the game in the first 23 seconds with a touchdown that neither side could improve upon the entire night. Both sides have been working hard getting ready for this rematch. If the Phoenix win again, it will be an undefeated season and a lock on the first place position going into the playoffs. If the Queens win, it will mean that they have tied the Phoenix with wins and losses going into Playoffs. Either way, with both team's home colors being Red, Yellow and Black it sends a clear message across the IWFL, Carolina is a name to respect in Women's football.

Phoenix will receive. Airplane shadow crossed the field just before the national anthem it was cool.

Queens starting strong on the defense. Phoenix defense is always strong, but the Queens out the gate are looking stronger. The battle is going up and down the field, the Queens offense is more consistent, but the Phoenix offense makes bigger gains.

1:04 left in the first quarter the Queens break out up the middle for a big run for a 60+ yard TD. Conversion is good, Queens draw first blood. 8 - 0.

13:57 in the 2nd a Phoenix punt carried for great yardage by the Queens sets them up for a TD, extra point is no good, Queens 14 Phoenix 0. This is the first time the entire season the Phoenix were behind by 2 TD's.

It was about the last 8 minutes of the first half when Air Phoenix started delivering completions. They even delivered one to the Queens.

1:30 left in the half, the Queens show everyone what long pass completions looks like. It looks like being all alone scoring a touch down. Conversion was a freebie, Queens 22, Phoenix still in the full and upright shut out position.

Many thanks to the announcer who did an excellent PSA on the effects of cocaine abuse.

8:12 in the 3rd quarter Queens run for 60 or so yards to make it 30 to nothing, or as the guy in the booth said, "She's run over 300 yards so far this game!!!" He's on his second 8 ball, but he may be right.

2:38 in the 3rd Quarter, the Phoenix decide to see what scoring feels like. Conversion is full of win. Queens 28 Phoenix 8.
The Queens staff is telling the scorekeeper to run the clock, but they are winning, so the referees aren't having it. It could be an unfair advantage.

5:43 in the 4th an AMAZING Phoenix pass and run brings the Phoenix up to 14. Apparently if the Queens lead by 16 they can have their first playoff at home.

OMFG 50 yard touchdown pass by the Phoenix! 1:50 left in the game. Queens 28, Phoenix 20

1:15 in the Game the Queens answer with a 30 yard TD pass. Conversion is good. Queens now lead by 16.

Some exciting Phoenix plays at the end of the game, but too little too late, Queens bring the revenge by winning 36 to 20 against the Phoenix.

If you've missed the excitement of seeing the Queens and the Phoenix play, come on out to Charlotte June 27th to see them play again in the first round of the play offs. I hear the competition between the Queens and the Phoenix is so strong that next year they will only play each other so the other teams can have a chance at good seasons.

Carolina Phoenix VS Carolina Queens

This game has the potential to be a game to be talked about long after it has been played. Two undefeated teams come together, one will leave that way. Two coaches come together, one the student, the other the teacher, one will leave the master. One state comes together, Carolina VS Carolina, no matter what happens here tonight, other teams in other states will know to respect that place in women's football.

There is excitement in the air, not only the excitement of playing the game, but also of seeing old friends, both in the stands as well as on the field. There is also a tension in the air, no matter what happens tonight on the Phoenix home field, there will be a reckoning, in two weeks on the Queens home field, it will either be redemption, or revenge, but it will also be the last game of the regular season. Neither team will want to see the other again until the Championships June 27th in Austin Texas.

Phoenix receive...
One down later a 66 yard touchdown! 2 Point conversion is good, 14:35 in the first quarter Phoenix lead 8 to nothing.

Phoenix kick off, fumble by the Queens, Phoenix recover! 1st and 10 on the 38!
3 Plays later the Queens reduce the Phoenix's front line to Swiss cheese causing a fumble giving it back.
The Phoenix Defense is ON FIRE tonight! The Queens first four downs were all negative yardage.
Both teams are forcing fumbles fairly well.
Phoenix Defense forcing the Swiss cheese front line back on the Queens Offense.
Queens get as close as the ten yard line before they run out of downs. The Phoenix say thank you and take it as far as the other 46 before being forced to punt themselves.

End of first quarter, Phoenix 8, Queens 0.

Cameron Williams is making some big plays tonight!

At the half in a Phoenix Defensive domination game, the Phoenix lead 8 to the Queens 0.

You can tell by the score, the Queens have brought a mighty defense of their own. As a whole however, I'd have to say that the Phoenix Offense are having an easier time of it.

In the second half, Coach Holmes goes to Craig's list for a center. OK, I kid, our center spent halftime vomiting into a storm drain. It is a testament to her dedication that she's even in the game for the third quarter. Fortunately the Phoenix Defense comes to the rescue!

Lets give some love to number 65 of the Queens who is really rocking it tonight on Defense. Number 65 was my number, and my wife's number too. Its lucky like that. You got to be awesome to wear 65.

Suddenly, and for no real reason that I can fathom, the Phoenix Defense try to score a TD for the Queens through a series of personal fouls...WTF... So the Phoenix get the ball on the 13 yard line with 87 yards to the end zone with 3:38 on the clock, ONLY because the Queens can't hold onto the ball.

I had a whole chair at my disposal, but I only ever managed to use the edge! The Phoenix remain undefeated! Two more games, and one of them will be a blood bath as Charlotte is going to get another crack at the mighty mighty Phoenix!!!

You're probably wondering where the action was? Where is the play by play? It is on the game film I took, as the Queens and the Phoenix defenses took turns taking the other side's offense apart. Tackle! Sack! Fumble! Rinse and repeat.

Carolina Phoenix VS Palm Beach Punishers

It is windy and overcast in what I am assured is a normally sunny Palm Beach Florida, the humidity reminds me so much of home, but the palm trees remind me that this is a strange land. At 7pm tonight the Palm Beach Punishers will be hosting a fairly well rested Carolina Phoenix. The last of us arrived in the wee morning hours, but everyone has had all day to sleep the road away and get their game faces on, even me. My game face includes hip new shades by Vuzix. Now I can watch the game as I record it in a view that for me will be like seeing it on the big projection TV screen. Actually this is pretty sweet, laptop for blogging, Blackberry for instant twitter updates, the Cannon camera, and my cool new HUD rounding it all out. I just wish I wasn't hungry an hour and a half before kickoff. On the other hand, the concession stand is making ribs. I could learn to like this town.

I also like Jackson's Seasoned Ribs, definitely worth the drive to get me a plate full of the Punisher's concessions!

Phoenix are receiving. Before the national anthem could even be sung, we have a delay of game. The weather waited until now to break towards the stormy. As long as we play I don't mind a little waiting.

Game on!

The Phoenix practicing a new strategy where the center keeps up a continuous stream of bad snaps. I'm sure this is part of some clever strategy to put the Punishers into a state of over extreme confidence. The Phoenix didn't really want to start the game with possession. Yeah, that's it! That's the ticket. We throw them an interception, nothing but setup. Really. Any second now, they will pull off the dummy masks and come out swinging! Coach Holmes is doing the old razzle dazzle for sure! The Punisher's get an easy wide open pass, five Phoenix giving the receiver plenty of space to make the catch. The Phoenix are going to really turn some heads when they unveil their diabolical master plan. Kick is no good, Punishers up by six with 14:54 in the second quarter.

Do you believe in Magic? I do. Either there was a curse lifted or the Coach decided to unveil his "A" team. Either way, the Phoenix have had a sudden transformation. Now if they could just lick those nasty penalties. 5:19 left in the first half, the Phoenix reveal the team they really are, extra point is good, Phoenix lead 8 to the Punisher's 6.

Maria Rivera and Tara James are fighting to see who is going to be the Phoenix player of the game Yonica Patrick is right on their heals. The second half demonstrates a FULLY ARMED AND OPERATIONAL PHOENIX!!! Muhahahahaaa...

6:31 in the 3rd another bad snap by the Phoenix leads to a fumble recovered by the Punishers which leads to a nail biting near touchdown. On the one yard line the Phoenix D holds them for one, two, three downs, but how do you stop a field goal try from the one yard line? 4:15 in the 3rd, Punishers 9, Phoenix 8.

13:43 in the 4th, the Phoenix get a fumble putting them on the 11th yard line, two plays later, Touch down! 2 Point conversion is no good. Phoenix 14, Punishers 9. And now...the Punishers look punished...broken really. Oh I get it! They are doing what we were doing at the beginning of the game. Why not, it worked for us.

4 Downs aren't enough for the Phoenix? No problem, coach sends in the defense. One quick interception and its four more downs.

12 seconds left in the game, the ball is on the five, the Punishers only need a TD to win by one. What time is it? Its brown trouser's time.

7 seconds, pass is incomplete.

5 seconds, the pass is caught up in traffic, Punishers have to run it, tackled at the buzzer....Phoenix win 14 to 9. Their season is now 5 wins, no losses.

Goooooooo Phoenix!!

In other related news the HUD was awesome, and I think I probably captured some of my tightest shots yet. Even if I did get caught up a little by the architecture of the booth.

Also, Coach Holmes owes me a pair of underwear. That was TOO close!! Stop messing with your fans!!!

Carolina Phoenix VS Orlando Mayhem

In the Phoenix's first season they only played one game. 12 players and a coach drove all the way to Orlando Florida to play the Mayhem. They had to borrow equipment when they got there and when one of the Phoenix put a helmet on for the first time she discovered that she was claustrophobic. 11 Phoenix took to the field, the game was officially forfit, but as a favor to the Mayhem (plus they drove all that way) the game was played, and the Mayhem won it 48 to 0. The Phoenix have not forgotten this, for three important reasons:
-It was their first loss.
-They have lost only three other times, two regular season, and one playoff game.
-The Mayhem keep a photo highlight of that game set to the song "Let the bodies hit the floor" as the intro to their website.

Tonight's game would be special. Tonight the now 30 strong Phoenix, were on their home turf, and every player was ready, willing, and able to play. There would be a reckoning.

Phoenix receive the kickoff and start strong, the Mayhem don't seem quite ready for the running and passing game the Phoenix have in store for them. The Phoenix's first possession brought them as close as the ten yard line. Mayhem get the ball and are allowed one carry before the Phoenix recover the fumble and bring the offense back to the field. 4:33 in the first quarter Air Phoenix delivers one across the end zone for six. The two point conversion is good and the Phoenix draw first blood with a score of 8 to zero.

Mayhem receive on the 25, four plays later they have to punt it from the 30. Phoenix ball, Phoenix throw an interception, and there is a flag on the play. Mayhem run it anyway, 70 yards across the goal line. At the end of the play the referee says, "Whoops, my bad, never mind about the flag, touchdown Mayhem". The extra point is good and a stung Phoenix find their lead shrunk to one as the Mayhem make the score Phoenix 8, Mayhem 7.

The Phoenix say in one voice "ORLY?!"

With fifty two seconds left in the quarter, the Phoenix receive the ball demanding justice, and nothing says justice like an eighty yard kick off return for a touchdown punctuated by a huge block by "Sanchez"! *BOOM!* The two point conversion is good and the Phoenix expand their lead to 16.

In the second quarter, the Mayhem get their groove on exploiting defensive mistakes by the Phoenix. Its 3rd and ten on the ten yard line, Mayhem's ball, the Phoenix have wiggle room as long as they don't make a mistake, but the mistake was made. Mayhem put another six on the board, making it Phoenix 16, Mayhem 13.

2:25 left in the second quarter, Mayhem's ball deep down on their own 30 after a Phoenix punt. A short Mayhem pass is picked off by the Phoenix and run to the end zone. Going for the conversion, a bad snap cost the play, and the Phoenix have to be satisfied by 6 making it now 22 to the Mayhem's 13.

Now we're at FOUR seconds left in the half, Mayhem blitz, forcing Air Phoenix to fly, the touchdown is made, and so is the conversion, the game goes into halftime with a score of Phoenix 30 to Mayhem's 13.

3:17 into the 3rd quarter, the Phoenix pass again for six, the conversion fails and their lead climbs to 36 to the Mayhem's 13.

It tends to be the coaches who set the tone on the field, a happy coach makes a happy team and a frustrated coach, makes for a frustrated team. A coach who gets a personal foul for behavior leads to more bad behavior fouls on the field. Coach Holmes did an outstanding job keeping the emotions of his team in check as Mayhem's decorum starts to fall apart.

Though temperatures are rising on the field, there is still some great football being played. Phoenix find themselves in possession on their own one yard line after recovering a Mayhem fumble. They try to get it out of there, but the Mayhem try a little harder to keep it there scoring a safety with 8:41 left in the game. The score is now Phoenix 36, Mayhem 15, but the game isn't over yet!

1:53 left in the game the Phoenix Air force is on high alert flying a sortie to into the end zone ending the game with a score of Carolina Phoenix 42, Orlando Mayhem 15.

After the game the Phoenix retired to Pepper's 101 Lounge where they danced the night away and delayed the muscle soreness that the day after always brings.

Carolina Phoenix VS Erie Illusion

It was a night of nearly unstoppable defenses and virtually un-startable offenses as the Phoenix took the field against the Illusion of Erie Pennsylvania.

It started like business as usual for the Phoenix, they received and made strong strides down the field, but the Illusion defense got their feet under them and created a wall that none shall pass.

When it came the Illusion's turn with the ball, they could do no better, in fact they seemed to do a little worse against the strong and focused Phoenix Defense. By the end of the first quarter the Phoenix defense had gained more yardage then the Phoenix Offense. Illusion carries tended to get stuck at the line of scrimmage if lucky, all but the shortest of passes (behind the line of scrimmage) failed.

Second quarter was much like the first, a constant grinding of defense against the ball often looking more like a stampede than anything else. The Phoenix offense could get the occasional first down, but couldn't ever seem to cross the line. The Illusion offense had real problems just crossing the 50.

At the two minute warning for the half, the Phoenix rally to within spitting distance of the end zone, but with only 34 seconds left on the clock throw an interception, the only one of the game for either side. The Illusion have the ball but no time to do anything with it. At the half the score is tied, nothing to nothing.

The second half starts more of the same only better for the Phoenix defense, not satisfied with just stopping the ball's forward progression they begin pushing it back further and further. More than once in the second half it looked like the defense would be scoring with a safety.

Finally something offensive happens! 1:19 left in the 3rd quarter, the Phoenix offense manages to get one past the Illusion defense and makes a great run to the end zone, only to have it called back again due to holding. Surely they can just do it again right? Ball is on the 17th yard line, and a bad snap makes it 2nd and 17. Phoenix run it up to the 9 and the clock runs out on the 3rd quarter. Starting back on the other end, encroachment by the Illusion brings the ball to 4 and half yards from the end zone and still third down. A short run, a short gain, here we are at 4th and 3 yards to the end zone, well maybe the Phoenix can score a field goal. Nope, the kick is blocked and the Illusion make a carry for 20 (the most forward momentum they've had the whole game), and we are still scoreless.

8:55 left in the game, the Phoenix offense bring it back to within five yards of the goal line but a false start pushes them back to the 10. It's like giant magnets are pushing the ball away from the end zone. After a series of grinding drives forward the Illusion take control on the 9th. At this point the Phoenix defense has spend more time in scoring distance than their offense or anything the Illusion as brought to town.

An Illusion punt is caught by Jet bringing the Phoenix back to the six yard line, with four downs to go. We've seen this before this game, fans on both sides are white knuckled in the bleachers wondering if this would be the one. It was. 4:21 left in the game, Kodac brings it home for six. The extra point fails due to a bad snap, but at least someone got some points on the board!

The rest was anticlimax, at the final the Phoenix are now 2 and 0 with a 6-0 win over the now 0 and 2 Illusion. My pick for player of the game goes to Maria Rivera, who in a borrowed (lucky) jersey taken off of my very back, lead the Phoenix in sacks.

Come out for the next home game May 2nd at AJ Simeon Stadium in Highpoint, when the undefeated Phoenix face off against the Orlando Mayhem. Kick off is at 7pm, tickets are $10.00 at the door, or $8.00 in advance. See you there!

Carolina Phoenix VS Louisville Nightmare

It might be first game jitters, but it could also be this chilly wind that has me on edge. I'm in the press section of AJ Simeon field in HIgh Point NC for the season opener, my companion tonight is the one and only teenage daughter of the Nightmare's coach. I am on my best behavior. I've got my very own camera now and this will be the first game I get to use it in.

Tonight's match up has the 30 strong Carolina Phoenix VS the fighting 15 of the Louisville Nightmare. Half of the Phoenix remember what it is like to hit the road with only 15, and eight or ten of those remember the long ride to Palm Beach Florida for their very first game fielding only 11. Spirits are high and there is a feeling of friendship shared between the Phoenix's black jerseys, and the Nightmare's blue jerseys. Did I mention being Chilly? That wind is really whipping up here.

Nightmare won the toss, Phoenix is receiving. Onside kick, Louisville recovers the ball on the 35. Phoenix won't let them gain any ground. Phoenix first possession for 23 yards. 3rd down Phoenix bad snap cost them the 23 yards back. Another high snap barely gotten, the pass tips off a Nightmare's fingers, Phoenix gets it and runs for 30. Phoenix false start cost them five. Phoenix trying to launch their Air Force, but the wind isn't clear for flying. Another over the head snap, another big loss of yards. Air Phoenix goes for another salvo, huge (lucky) catch! Air Phoenix flies again, skipping the punt and sends it into the numbers of the Nightmare blue, but she couldn't hold on.

Louisville gets possession on the 46 and gets their ground game going, making some impressive drives up the middle. 1:45 Left in the first quarter the Nightmare make a 12 yard run for six, extra point is good and the Phoenix have tasted their own blood.

Louisville tries the onside kick again, but the Phoenix is ready for that. Fool me twice.... Air Phoenix is grounded due to turbulence, but the can still run the ball. 13:30 in the second quarter, Phoenix put six on the board, but a bad snap cost them the extra point.

The game goes on. Air Phoenix keeps trying to gain altitude, but the wind has other plans. The Nightmare sticks to a ground attack, but they are having on again, off again success against the Phoenix defense. GO NAILS! She gets the ball. She runs with it. She scores! 5:26 left in the second. The extra point is good! Phoenix 13, Nightmare 7.

25 Seconds left in the half, Phoenix wants to enter the second half with a 2 in their score, so they make it a Phoenix 20 with a couple of good runs.

At the half, Phoenix 20, Nightmare 7. And folks, my fingers are cold. I have gloves, but I'm left with the ultimate dilemma, warm fingers, or accurate typing? Gloves win. Hey, ghaG AIN'G GO ABAF.

9:10 left in the 3rd Quarter, the Phoenix turn up the heat (but not to my fingers) Bad snap on the extra point though, Phoenix 26, Nightmare 7

After the kickoff, the Phoenix force a turnover, but a bad snap by the Phoenix gives it right back on the next play.

3:57 in the 4th, the Phoenix score on a mix of passes and runs. Credit where credit is due, I like the Nightmare. They remind me of the Phoenix three years earlier. 32 to 7, bad snap causes another missed extra point.

On offense, the name of the night is Nails, on defense, the player to watch is JP.

Final score Carolina Phoenix 32, Louisville Nightmare 7.

On the camera, the game ran just under two and a half hours (I recorded from the national anthem to the team meetings at the end of the game) about seven and a half gigabytes all told. It rendered into mpeg2 and looked fantastic, but it was still 7.5ish GB. I had to dumb it WAY down to get it small enough for the league upload. 1.5GB and it isn't nearly so nice.

April 6, 2009

Carolina Phoenix 2009 Season Begins Saturday

The Carolina Phoenix will be kicking off their 2009 season with a home game at AJ Simeon Stadium in High Point. Kick off for all home games is at 7pm.

This first game will be against the Louisville Nightmare a brand new and untested team. If you've been following the Phoenix since their X-Team days you know that "brand new" and "untested" does not necessarily equal weak. They don't have their roster up yet, so I don't know how many they will be bringing, but I'm sure it will be a great game.

The Phoenix are looking good, though some of their veterans won't be returning to the field this year. Grandma is recovering from neck surgery, and having retired from the game is turning her vast experience towards coaching. Poetry has also moved to the coaching side. Tank is out this season on maternity leave, but still functions as the IWFL team delegate. I have to take fully responsibility for that one. Seven has been on light duty during practices, and everyone is wondering if she will have medical clearance from off season back surgery to play. That still leaves 30 very fit, very well trained players itching to take the field come game time.

The Phoenix will have their first three games at home this season, and will be traveling as far as Palm Beach Florida before playoff time. Come on out to AJ Simeon Stadium in High Point and wave to the camera, I'll wave back. If you bring your friends, I might even grill up some chicken or BBQ at the tailgate parties at the last three home games. I hear High Point's Mayor is a Phoenix fan and might be making an appearance.

AJ Simeon Stadium 2920 School Park Road High Point, NC 27265 Kick off will be 7PM for all home games. General Admission - $10 Seniors, Students (ages 13 and Older) and Military and Law Enforcement with ID - $5 Children under 12 - Free

Order your tickets online here, or get them at the door at game time.

Phoenix VS Blitz: The Game

I don't know where I am.
We can't find the field.
The Magellan can only do so much, one has to plan a highway system, not simply stack new roads on top of the old ones.

Finally we make it, tired and disorientated, to the field. I think it was at some sort of school it was hard to say. I didn't see any classrooms but there were a lot of apartment buildings everywhere.

The field is turf, it is laid out for some other sport that is about ten or twenty yards wider than football field width. The football lines are there too. There is no announcer's box. The bleachers are in the rain and are the short and portable type. The announcer is in a tent on the side line.

I have my gear and a borrowed video camera. I begin to set up. Did I mention the rain. It was a warm soaking rain. It was a very nice rain. But it isn't a nice rain if you have a note pad, lap top, digital camera and video camera. I had all of these. I had to improvise.

From Phoenix VS B...

Of the Blitz I found them small, fast, and attractive. What? Even the crowd looked good. Don't blame me, I just call them like I see them.

The award for Phoenix fandom goes to Murph's mom who came up from Rhode Island to see the game, and brought no rain gear. It was love that kept her in the stands, and it wasn't a love of football.

Alright, lets talk kickoff. Phoenix receive on the 28. They fumble, Blitz recover and at 14:04 in the first quarter make their first touchdown, extra point is good, and away we go.

Phoenix receive on the 30 and fumble (sound familiar?). The difference is this time they manage to keep it. But it is for naught. At 7:06 the Blitz score another touch down. They seem very well practiced. Very well rehearsed. Very well prepared. It is very obvious they studied the heck out of the game footage we sent them. The Blitz have one microphone and their cheerleader is running it. But he's a nice guy. Occasionally he announces the fouls to the crowd. Mostly he cheers the Blitz on and keeps the crowd stirred up.

Phoenix receive on the 38 and with 4:21 left in the first quarter cross the 50 for the first time. Tired, lost, hungry, and shook up is no way to go through a football game, but if that's what you have, that's what you play with.

Phoenix get within 10 of the end zone and lose possession. This will be a theme this wet enchanted evening. This first time however, the Phoenix intercept it back. 13:29 in the 2nd quarter the Phoenix get on the board with seven.

I'm digging the Canadian fans. Half of them I absolutely love and the other half are cruising for a rumble. All of them are far too pretty. The fact that they can buy beer at the concession stand and the fact that the Phoenix are such class acts lead to me loving them all by the end of the game. They just needed to get buzzed and realize that we're cool too. By the end of the game they were cheering for both sides. They just wanted to see good plays.

Looks like the Blitz are the other tier two team that can pass. 7:12 on a 4th down the Blitz make the score 21 to the Phoenix's seven.

Phoenix receive on the 38th, break out with a couple of most excellent runs. They made it all the way to the 8 yard line. Few teams have a defense that can outrun the Phoenix. The Blitz is one of these, stopping the Phoenix offense cold. It is a terrific position for the Phoenix Defense to do that voodoo that they do so well, and the Blitz knew it too. The first half trickles away one knee at a time.

The referees had a tough time this game, they were asked to referee American football but I think they were reffing something else- European football perhaps. Fortunately the IWFL had a officer on hand to notice this and quietly take notes on it. Perhaps next year...

Third quarter, Phoenix are a little more awake and warmed up. They hold off the Blitz score until 12:13. Next Phoenix possession its a short pass and a 50 yard run for the Phoenix Score, its now Blitz 28, Phoenix 14.

8:19 the Blitz cross the line again. It isn't about their Offense being better or faster, it has everything to do with being prepared and practiced against the Phoenix defense in the previous two weeks. 35 - 14 Blitz.

2:00 in the 3rd quarter the Phoenix drive...drive...drive it home making the score Blitz 35, Phoenix 21. 1:13 on the first Blitz possession after the kickoff they score a touchdown off of a pass, Blitz now at 41.

Sometime after something happened but I don't know what it was because of the big assed tent on the sidelines in the way.

Final Score Blitz 41, and Chicago bound, Phoenix 27 and hoping they can get back across the boarder. Tonight the Blitz proved that being better rested and better prepared isn't much but its enough to get you to Chicago for the championships. Congratz Blitz, and I'll see you there!

Stay tuned. I'm too tired to write it now as it is after 1am on Sunday in Canada and we have to be at work on Monday. Tomorrow, we hellride. I have another Phoenix VS Blitz entry in me. Don't bother if you are looking for football talk because it isn't going to happen. This is about wining, losing, blame, and the differences between team sports and individual sports. I'm writing this here so I can't weasel out of writing it. You will hold me accountable to it. Plus there's a drinking story in it, so it can't lose.

Phoenix VS Blitz: The Journy There

They say an army moves on it's stomach. This assumes of course that everything else involved with moving that army is already taken care of.

As their first "full fledged-full membership" season with the IWFL the Phoenix can be said to operate on a shoe string budget- and that's giving shoestrings a lot of credit. They managed to fund themselves almost the whole regular season through dues, donations, and paying out of pocket. After a 7 and 1 season the barrel was dry for playoffs and the ever present championship game in Chicago. But before Chicago, they have to move 28 players, two coaches, and a blogger to a different country- and back again. It seems simple when you refer to 28 players as a group. The reality is when traveling you are moving a player and a player and a player (keep going until you reach 28, then add a coach, a coach, and a blogger (or after this gets published the "official team tattle tail").

So here's the break down, two coaches, a blogger and ten players climbed into a fifteen passenger van and a support vehicle. We left at 8am Friday morning. Our trip took us north to Liverpool NY where we were guest of TP's family. They had a house large enough to sleep us and were ready and capable of feeding the entier team. Saturday we'll climb back into the vehicles and drive the last four or five hours (depending on whose navigating) to the field.

Group two left about 2pm and will drive strait through to Montreal. They will arrive late, sleep later and rendeavous at the field.

Groups three through five or six are doing their own thing which includes getting their United Airlines flight cancelled (Boo United!) and getting hooked up by US Air (Horay for US Air!). Players as of Friday night, in New England, in NC, and somewhere on the highway between here and there.

If all goes well, all 28 players, two coaches, and a blogger will be at the field just outside of Montreal Quebec Canada at 5:30pm for the kickoff. Pray for us.

One more thing that separates football, and I suppose all team sports, from fencing occured this week. The IWFL mandates that each team must supply the next team they play with the game footage from the last game they played. Some teams don't do it, and they get fined for it. In one case that I am aware of the snubbed team got the film from the team the offending team played last. Its playoff time and now the gamesmenship has driven into overdrive. Two days after playing their last game, the Phoenix had the game authored to DVD and in the mail to Canada. The Montreal team made sure the game arrived the day before we had to leave. The rule about getting the film exchanged was fufilled without actually allowing it to be useful. Well played... So if the Phoenix win, they did it without the game footage (woot!), if they lose this pre-game foul will have had something to do with it. I can see it from their point of view- Win at all cost! Hoo raa!! Whatever. Lame.

The best team should win based on skill on the field not BS off the field. Rant off and goodnight!

Congratulations Carolina Phoenix Tier 2 South Atlantic Champions

It was a nice day at Durham Stadium as the tailgaters set up their camps and the smell of grilling meat filled the afternoon air. The news was that rain was coming in from the west, but no one was willing to let that possibility dampen their spirits.

From Phoenix VS Th...

From Phoenix VS Th...

During the game I had the pleasure of sitting with "The Order of the Phoenix", there are fans, and there are serious fans. These guys need their own section!

From Phoenix VS Th...

To the ringing of cowbells and the yell of the fans the Thunder receive the ball. Shortly later, it would be the Phoenix's turn. 7:41 left in the first quarter, with Thunder pressure a 20 yard pass finds its way into the end zone, Phoenix score with the extra point and it begins at seven to zero.

It was about here the rain began to fall, it was a nice steady cool rain that sent fans packing into the hallways and out to their cars to get their umbrellas. On the field, the relief of the cool rain was offset by the slick ball and slick field. Fumbles abounded on both sides. In one Thunder fumble a Phoenix line person picks it up and heads for the end zone, they are brought down fifteen yards later dragging three thunder players the entire distance. The crowd went wild!

2:48 in the second quarter, the rainy conditions kept the score low, but the Phoenix do it anyway, conversion is good Phoenix go into halftime with a score of 15 to 0.

Coming back from half time, the rain has let up and the air has cooled considerably. Phoenix receive from the Thunder. A nice kick goes deep only to fall through the hands of a Phoenix receiver. She turns around and chases after it, picks it up nearly in the end zone and proceeds to run sixty yards upfield. Not satisfied with a mere sixty yards the very next play takes it the rest of the way with the first touch down of the second half scored in the first 50 seconds of play. Conversion fails Phoenix 21, Thunder 0.

8:13 the Phoenix capitalize on a Thunder fumble and two plays later cross the line, extra point is good, Phoenix now up by 28.

12:21 in the 4th quarter the Phoenix break out for a great big run, the extra point is good phoenix now up by 35.

4:43 left in the game in a move that rattled our ear drums and cleared the stands, the Phoenix player known as "Predator" heads toward the end zone. A Thunder player moves to intercept taking a place as an impassible wall between the ball and scoring. Predator however didn't see a wall, she only saw grass that needed mowing down. *BOOOOM!* with the sound of shattering Thunder, nothing in the world is left to stop the mighty Predator!
Final score Phoenix 41, and the new Tier 2 South Atlantic Champions!

From Phoenix VS Th...

After the game, players and fans from both teams converged on Time Out sports bar in Durham for some good food and some good times. I always love these events because once there you can never tell one team from the other. What happens on the field stays on the field and everyone has a good time.

Next stop for the Phoenix: Montreal Canada for a playoff game against the Tier 2 North Atlantic Champions the Blitz. Here's as good a place as any to post a special message to the fans from Coach Tim Holmes:

Phoenix Fans Unite!

I have been to the top of the mountain, and it was good. I have seen what true professional women's football looks like. As the unofficial team blogger I feel it is my job, neigh, my duty to take Phoenix fandom to the next level!!

When we are away, we need to be together. There is a visitor's side, and yes, it is there for us, but hear me out on this one. Most fields are orientated such that the sun sets behind the home side. So throughout the whole game, the visitors are staring into the sun and as you can see above hiding behind umbrellas in the Hotlanta sun. I counted over 20 Phoenix fans in Atlanta and never more than five in any one place. My suggestion is to follow the lead of Brandon who's running the Phoenix camera- base yourself in the shade of the announcer's box. It is shaded, it is the best seat in the house, and if we're sitting there the home team fans can't.

As a bonus, by being together, we appear a larger crowd than might actually be. We yell and cheer for our own team and those home team fans to the left us think that the visitors are filling all of the stands to their right. Those home team fans on the right think that everyone to the left of them are cheering for the visitors. Divide and conquer!

Two: We need more cowbell. We need more signs, banners, bunting, t-shirts, hats, horns, bells, blocks, bullhorns and whatever else you can think of. Lets make some noise! Even if for whatever reason you can't ring the bell or do the wave, if you're wearing a team shirt, you're helping out. This goes for home as well of course. Away we just need to turn it up to eleven.

One thing that we can and do in Durham that Atlanta couldn't do was have a tailgate party. I suppose you could have done it in Atlanta, but I feel weird about setting up my grill on pavement, and having beer at a high school is just wrong. Our home tailgate parties are good, but they could be better. We need to work together more, to have one big party in the middle rather than four or five parties around the edges. When that visiting team's bus pulls in, I want every one of them to think to themselves, "Holy cow! Look at the tailgaters! The Phoenix are serious! Its a psychological game, but first it is where we get to have fun, eat and mingle before kickoff. I tend to park where I do first row in the middle so I can give away some drinks to the visiting team when they get back in their bus. I want their last view of us to be that we are really amazingly cool people.

I realize that teams like Atlanta who have been to three championships and are wearing those spiffy championship rings have had a lot of time in past years to organize and work stuff out. I feel it is time to get started so when we get there we as fans will be ready to give the team the support they deserve.

Phoenix @ Xplosion

From Phoenix @ Xpl...
Witness the POWER of the world's smallest tailgate party!

The tier two Phoenix come into this game 6-0 for the season, on a twelve game winning streak with their eyes firmly affixed on the championship. The Xplosion, tier one veterans of the championship and winners themselves have had something of a hit and miss season with so many veterans retiring at the end of the last season. They want a win, and they see the Phoenix as easy pickings.

The Xplosion lost a bunch of veterans last season, but they are a huge squad with over 40 dressed out and ready to play. They are also veterans of spectacle and the psychological game. For instance when we arrived the scoreboard read Home 35, Visitors 0, 4th quarter 1st and 10, home team's ball. They had a special area for their veteran players, making it look like a homecoming as much as anything else. VIP sections in the stands, swag (last home game of the season the Xplosion were having a "blowout sale"). They had an actual cheer leading squad. 18 strong, five of them men. No children, not a high school squad. Xplosion squad uniforms. Let me take this moment for a public service message: Please give to the starving cheerleader fund. They have spirit, what they need is a steak. Also, a few Twinkies wouldn't hurt either. Lets fill those bellies so they can fill their uniforms! Kidding aside, they were a competitive squad with abs you could count from the highest reaches of the stands.

The Xplosion bring nine coaches to the field compared to the Phoenix's two. The Xplosion have fans, they also have a "self proclaimed" Pep Squad, instruments, signs, and all. Bad assed!

Back to the game. Xplosion win the toss, Phoenix receive. Phoenix gained good yardage but had to punt. This doesn't normally happen until the second half. Oh yes, this is gonna be a good game! The punt goes deep and the Xplosion take over on the 5. This is where the Phoenix defense shine! But not today. Xplosion break free and make it up to the 42. It is at this point the Phoenix fans numbering in the 20's realized that what we were seeing here was what it looked like when two strong teams played together.

With seconds left in the first quarter the Phoenix fumble in the backfield making for an Xplosion possession in scoring range. Folks...its brown trouser's time. I hope I packed my emergency pants.

11:50 in the second quarter I witness something I don't think I've ever seen before. A team scoring before the Phoenix. Extra point is good, Xplosion up by 7.

7:46 in the second a rattled Phoenix let another go by, but the Xplosion are having to work for it, maybe not as hard as I would like, but it isn't free. The extra point is good, the Xplosion are now up by 14.

This is a game defined by small Phoenix mistakes capitalized by a well disciplined team. If you always make the same mistakes, sooner or later someone is going to train specifically to exploit them.

1:28 in the 2nd quarter in "The Pass That Should Not Have Been", the Xplosion literally fall across the line for their third touchdown, extra point is good, Xplosion 21, Phoenix 0.

Half-time, congratulations to the mens and women's cheerleaders of the year. It was kind of a homecoming king and queen feel, the whole thing. Then came the entertainment. Fiona Simone, or as the folks in the stands said, "Who?".
Due to the distortion of the sound system and the fact that I'm Celtic American, I have no idea if she was good or not but I liked her look, I liked her sweet purple mohawk, and now I know that there is a genre called "Lesbian Hip-Hop". Cool. The crowd in the stands, better than three hundred by my estimate, seemed to like her, and that's good enough for me. I also got a free CD. Someone went around the stands passing them out. I am going to have to give it a listen before I hand it off to someone who knows about this "hippity hoppity musicky euniquey(?)" thing.

On to third quarter, 7:44 to be exact, things get a little hot on the field and I'm not just talking about the temperature. I get the feeling that the Xplosion hadn't been hit in a while. The Xplosion have the ball on the one yard line and it took a full four plays to cross the line...well, truth be told you'll never convince me that they actually crossed the line, but they got their touchdown anyway. Its the first time I have ever heard of a touchdown being awarded when the football was found at the bottom of a pile of bodies still on the one. I guess they tried real hard and that counts for something. Xplosion 28, Phoenix 0.

Tonight's magic number is "30", that is where the Xplosion always took possession, that is where our offense always got stopped.

Forth quarter someone turned the Phoenix defense up to eleven. I don't know where they found it, the Phoenix Defense has been playing the whole game...almost literally. 7:27 in the 4th their second wind runs out. Xplosion 35, right where the scoreboard said it would be in the 20 minutes before the game even started.

The IWFL has rules about sportsmanship. They frown on end zone antics and showboating in general. I realize that this is the Xplosion's best game this season, but come on, you guys were national champions. How about some class?

4:35 left in the 4th the Phoenix defense find an extra 200%, but when all they had left was 10% that isn't much. Final score Xplosion 42, Phoenix 0. This makes the Xplosion bid for a wild card slot in tier one much more certain, while the Phoenix are counting the points up wondering if they can hold on to second in division two.

To sum up, the Xplosion was the first real look at what women's football can be. They ran a great show with very high production value. They had a strong support base with staff, vending, half time entertainment, terrific organization, and one of the best announcers I've heard anywhere. The fans were all class acts, and everyone went the extra mile to show us terrific hospitality. I honestly can't wait to go back and watch how the Phoenix fair against them next season.

Next week, Durham Stadium, come see the Phoenix finish up their regular season when they face the Cape Fear Thunder! I'll have the grill hot, and the chickens standing at attention.

Phoenix VS Vipers

The skies darkened at the Turning Point Studio's tent as the Central Pennsylvania Viper's bus pulled into Durham Stadium. Tailgaters were popping up like meercats trying to get a glimpse at what this tier one team was going to look like.

The Carolina Phoenix went into this game tied in wins with two other tier two teams. The seeding was down to indicators and that put the Phoenix in third trailing Montreal and Clarksville. Every game is important, every touch down scored can bring you closer to first place, every touchdown scored against you can bring you farther away. A loss now would be a very unwelcome thing.

As the Vipers entered the locker room, the lightning started falling from the sky like rain, and the the only thing falling faster than the rain was a Bush approval rating. We hunkered under our tents eating BBQ'd chicken and wondering how long the delay would be.

From Phoenix VS Vi...

Just before seven the storm moved out and people started shaking out wet chairs and packing up food getting ready to head inside. We were all listening to the PA system. When Barry gets on the mic we know the national anthem is close to starting.

While standing in the ticket line off in the distance I think I hear a whistle. The referee's must be fooling around pre-kickoff. I'm standing about seven people from the ticket booth when I hear Barry come on the PA system announcing that the storm had knocked the PA system out and he apologized for the delay, the extra point attempt turned into a successful conversion, the Phoenix are leading 8 to nothing.

We make it to our seats with a pretty nice sized crowd considering the weather. 5:17 in the first the Phoenix do it again to show us what we missed while we were buying tickets. The extra point fails, so the Phoenix are at 14 and the Vipers are at 0.

The Vipers are the weakest team in the strongest tier one conference, while the Phoenix are the strongest team in a small tier two conference. Everyone was waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never came to be. 10:24 in the second quarter a 30 yard pass leads to another Phoenix TD, extra point is good, Phoenix now at 21.

With 4:42 in the Second quarter the Phoenix make a short pitch, the ball carrier breaks one, two, three, four tackles to score a touchdown. Extra point is good and the Phoenix are now at 28.

2:44 left in the half, Viper's have possession, its 4th down on the 30 and they are going for it, the pass is intercepted by the Phoenix who saunter into the end zone. Bad snap, the extra point attempt is no good, Phoenix 34 Vipers zero.

With seconds left in the half the Vipers make a pass completion and there is nothing but green grass ahead of them...but no one out flies the Phoenix. Halftime finds the Phoenix at 34 and the Vipers with nothing.

Second half, 6:25 in the third quarter the Phoenix are for the first time this game forced to punt as the Vipers defense gets their legs under them. The Phoenix are only allowed to score one more time this half at 3:39 in the 3rd when the Phoenix break away with a 55 yard run. Extra point is good, Phoenix are stopped at 41 to nothing.

After the game its time for the after party with special thanks to Time Out sports bar and grill for an outstanding time. There was much fun had by all, and the Vipers were outstanding party guest. Some of us sleep however, so yours truly did not head to the dance club at 2am when the others did. You play hard, you party hard, and the Phoenix and Vipers both proved they could do both with wild abandon.

Meanwhile....

The Montreal Blitz allow 14 to the New England Intensity in a 40-14 game, and the Clarksville Fox are shutout in Chicago against the Force 40-0. With the Phoenix shutout, they move up in the standings. Is that a Division two number one spot I see? Lets see if they can keep it when the Phoenix Travel to Atlanta on the 7th to play former IWFL champion team the Xplosion, then its back for their last regular season home game against the Thunder on the 14th.

I'll have the grill hot and the chicken at attention.

Phoenix Silence the Thunder

The smell of grilling meat brought some hungry locals to my mobile HQ. Over smoked sausages I pitched women's football to a couple of dubious teen aged girls. Not everyone is cut out for team sport, as I can very well tell you. Before anyone asks, no I did NOT pitch the sport of fencing to them. I leave my business cards at home on football days.

It was a perfect Saturday afternoon in John P Daskyll Stadium when the Cape Fear Thunder played host to the Carolina Phoenix. Last season, the Thunder sported a roster of 30 while the Phoenix boasted only 15. This year the Phoenix bring 30 to the Thunder's 20. Or to sum up the game in the words of the Thunder's Announcer... "OH........no...." Oh yes, the Phoenix brought it!

The booth helped with the Phoenix kickoff by supplying some artificial crowd noise to the mix. Unfortunately it only seemed to add to the Thunder's jitters. The ball landed among the Thunder and some elementary school ball broke out. There was laughter in the stands as the Thunder receiver made two attempts to pick up the ball only to kick it instead. Finally she just fell on it, and the Thunder start the game on the 20 yard line.

Two minutes later at 13:00 in the first quarter the Phoenix cross the line for six and the game is afoot! Later a bad snap by the Thunder lead to a Phoenix recovery, had it not been for grass gremlins I'm pretty sure the Phoenix defense would have scored on that one.

9:46 in the first quarter a Phoenix touch down is brought back due to a penalty. 9:27 they put it back over the line again. Extra point is good, Phoenix lead the Thunder 13 to 0.

First play after the kick off the Thunder throw an interception, Phoenix have possession on the 17 yard line. First Phoenix carry is a touchdown extra point fails 8:09 still in the first and the Phoenix pull away from the Thunder 19 to 0.

There was 1:07 left in the first quarter when the Phoenix had a possession they didn't score on. That was the moment the Thunder woke up. In the second quarter the Thunder played some football making a play and recovering a Phoenix fumble.

10:09 in the second quarter the Phoenix take the punt and score on the very next play, conversion is good and the Phoenix are now at 27 to the Thunder's nothing.

4:58 in the second the Phoenix do it again, only to have a penalty bring it back. I'll let the Thunder announcer sum this one up. "The Phoenix run the exact same play and get the exact same results." Extra point is good, Phoenix make it 34.

Kickoff is received on the 3 yard line, and it is NOT looking good for the Thunder, but to their credit they held on for four plays before the safety makes the score 36 to 0. Just as a side note the Thunder receiving the kickoff on the 3 didn't have nearly as much to do with the power of the kicker as it did with the fact that the Phoenix have a couple of players who can nearly beat the ball to the other side. I predict we are only one high slow kick away from the Phoenix catching their own kickoff. That my friends is FAST!

In an amazing Thunder jump and catch they pick off a Phoenix pass for a seat clearing interception...and I mean fans of both sides stood up and applauded an amazing move. Sadly however, with 19 seconds left in the first half it was for naught.

Half time begins with Boomer the Thunder's mighty...duck(?)...bear(?)...thing(?)...mascot(!) leading a rousing hoola hoop race, followed by a shopping cart race. Next up the Play it Again Sports truck drives around the track while fans attempt to hurl a plastic football into a bucket in the bed for a chance at $250.00.

Coffee, snacks, a potty break and we're back starting the second half with the Phoenix leading by 36. 10:31 in the 3rd quarter, the Phoenix break out the special effects with blur and a touch down. The secret is to take the picture where you thinks she's going to run and hope the camera snaps while she's still in the frame. Its just like photographing a meteor shower, you take a lot of snaps and you hope you get lucky. Phoenix 43, Thunder 0.

7:19 in the 3rd a white dove flies over the field. Yes, three games in a row, its like Jon Woo is directing or something. At any rate at 10:22 the Phoenix make it look easy with a nice round 50 to nothing on a business as usual play.

The rest is history, the Phoenix wrap the game up with a bow 50 to nothing then head over to "Do Dirty's" house for a team BBQ, and game highlights played back on the TV. It was a lot of fun for the whole family, but the drive back home in the wee hours was rough. I generally like being asleep for six hours at 4am, not arriving home. Something tells me I'd better get used to it though, playoffs are coming!

From Phoenix @ Thu...

See you Saturday May 31st at Durham Stadium when the Carolina Phoenix hope to make their eleventh consecutive win in a row against the tier one Central Pennsylvania Vipers. Kick off is at 7pm, but I'll have the grill hot two hours before that. Come out for some tail gating and some awesome football. All you doubters out there! I'm calling you out! Put up, or shut up.

Phoenix 20 Queens 14 in Overtime

"There's a flag, anyone know why there's a flag?"
"I think it means we have possession."

It was the rematch of the year and the visitor's bleachers had nearly as many spectators as the home team side. The visitor side had plenty of time to meet and mingle since the announcer never turned the speakers on for our side. At half time I was elected "block captain" and sent over to ask them to turn the sound on. They promised they would, but never did. After the game, the Phoenix videographer revealed to me that the announcer used the silence to their advantage with the home team crowd. Real adult move, but whatever.

I'd like to say that the referee's were smart, in the know, and completely unbiased; but I can't, because we don't know what any of the calls they made were. We'd see a flag, shake the Magic Eight Ball and count the yards against the Phoenix. We learned later that though the referee's were throwing flags and making calls, they weren't able to tell anyone who actually caused the infraction. In my experience, the referee throws the little yellow flag they keep secreted in their crotch pockets, then they announce what rule was broken, and who broke it. We could only tell that they were doing one of those, heard rumor that they were doing a second, but not even they seemed to know who made the infraction.

Next there was the "injury incident". In fencing, which barely counts as as a contact sport, we are required to have a medical person on standby for the duration of the tournament. Even T-Ball requires an ambulance. Well, the IWFL also requires an EMT on standby. The Queens didn't get the memo apparently. When one of their players went down on the field, they had to borrow our trainer because they didn't have one. They had to go into the stands and borrow a pair of scissors, which I gladly loaned from my multi-tool. They had to borrow ice from the Phoenix, because they didn't have any of their own. They had to call 911 because they had no ambulance on site. We had to wait fifteen minutes for the fire truck to arrive. We had to wait five or ten more minutes while the firemen determined that an ambulance was needed. We had to wait ten or so additional minutes while we waited for the ambulance to arrive. We had to wait yet another five or so minutes while they moved the fire truck so the ambulance could get on the field. Then finally, FINALLY, the injured player (you remember the injured player right), could get the help they needed. I am, as a coach, insulted to the core that the Queens management think so little of their players that they wouldn't provide for the health and safety of their players.

OK, I think I can stop ranting now. Lets talk some football!

If you have been following the banter on Myspace, you know the Queens really wanted a win against the Phoenix, bad. When they lost the first game, the banter intensified. Many of the players of these two teams played together back in the days of the Cougars and the Cardinals. Coach Holmes of the Phoenix mentored under the Queen's coach, Coach Brown. To say that these games are like family reunions, is an understatement. It is a very dysfunctional family on the field but afterwards you just have to add alcohol to defuse the tensions.

Kickoff was promptly at 6PM, Phoenix received (we have no idea who won the toss). The Queens started the game with their dream team defense and the Phoenix ended their first possession having lost 5 yards. The Phoenix brought their first string defense also and the first Queen carry ends with a 20 yard loss. At the end of the Queens first possession they lost a total of 36 yards.

The Phoenix lose possession on the first play of their second possession, but answer the very next play with an interception and strong run. The very next play the Phoenix offense run for a touchdown with 9:44 left in the first quarter. The extra point is no good so the Phoenix start by putting six on the board.

Speaking of strong defenses, both sides had strong defense squads. There was only 6:08 left in the first quarter when any team managed their first down. That was had by the Phoenix.

I said rant off, but I have to take a quick moment out to make a public service message to coaches all over. If you are going to have a temper tantrum on a windy day and throw your plays on the ground at least make sure your plays are on a clip board. Otherwise you end up having to run down the side line chasing your plays while the folks in the stands laugh at you. You look like a tool and that is totally uncool. That is the end of this public service message.

It was a day of the defenses with both the Phoenix and the Queens really having trouble making headway until 2:57 in the second quarter when the Queens finally made their first successful offensive play. Too bad the penalty brought it back.

At the half the Phoenix still lead the Queens 6 to nothing.

It was back and forth in the third quarter until 4:36, when a brilliant Phoenix run puts them in seven yards of touch down territory which they did the very next play. The extra point attempt was broken but turned into sweet two point conversion. Phoenix now lead the Queens 14 to nothing.

With eleven minutes left in the 4th quarter the Queen's coach finally put in their first string offense. With ten minutes left in the game it looked like the Queens just might prevent the much dreaded and humiliating shut out. Finally at 8:10 they made it over the line, putting six on the board. Phoenix 14, Queens 6.

At around 7:00 in the fourth quarter it looked like the Phoenix put in their third or fourth string offense. From the stands it looked like suddenly the Phoenix forgot how to play the game. Perhaps it was some nefarious plot by a football hating super villain, as it was here also that the Queens took that game stopping injury.

It was during the long wait for medical help that I watched a white dove fly over the field. What? I'm superstitious it happened during the last Queens-Phoenix game as well.

Finally the injured player got the help they needed and we got to see who would manage to gain momentum first. It was the Queens with the momentum. Four plays and a penalty later, they made a second touchdown with 2:32 left in the game. The conversion is good and the game is tied 14 - 14! The first time in eight games that it even looked remotely like something other than a Phoenix win. In the stands we were taking turns relaxing our worn out butt muscles with short walks.

Regular time expires, and complete confusion takes over. In the stands, without the aid of an announcer we don't know what happened next. In fencing there is a coin toss. If no one scores in overtime, the winner of the coin toss wins the bout. Some people said the NFL do something like this too. Someone else coming back from the snack bar said the announcer had said that overtime was five minutes. Suddenly the clock reads fifteen minutes and that means nothing to us either because we learned quickly in the first quarter that the time, yards, and downs, on the board did not reflect our objective reality. That is to say, whoever was running the board was probably well-meaning, but an unpaid and untrained volunteer.

Fortunately, the Phoenix put their first string offense back in and though we didn't know what was going on, we knew that the game was going to be OK. Who wanted to win the most? The Phoenix did. With first and inches, the Phoenix put it over the line. The stands were absolutely silent. We all looked around for the inevitable yellow flag which for some reason didn't materialize, Phoenix for the win at 8:22 in overtime!

Final score, Phoenix 20, Queens 14. The game that started at 6PM ended at 10PM. The Phoenix are one small step closer to the playoffs and the Queens are one giant leap away from it.

Finally, I want to say Hi to all my new cool friends in the stands. Also I have a question for you paid professional writers out there. When some stranger walks up to you and says they have read your stuff, do you get that feeling like you are about to be shot or something? Just curious?

Carolina Phoenix VS Carolina Queens

"Once I was the learner, now I am the master"

This was the kind of game that make football fans. Tonight the Carolina Phoenix hosted the Carolina Queens at Durham Stadium. Players from the teams knew one another. The coaches knew one another. The Phoenix coach refers to the Queens coach as a mentor, and one awesome mentor he was.

The Phoenix came into the game 2 and 0, the Queens entered the fray 1 and 1. The Queens needed a win, the Phoenix had a streak they did not want to break. Both teams brought their "A" game tonight, but only one came away a winner.

It all started with the toss, the Queens won it and chose to kick off. The coin toss was the last time that luck made an appearance in this game. Both teams had a very different make up, the Queens had a more uniform roster while the Phoenix have a player for every occasion. The end result was that the teams themselves were pretty evenly matched. Where you saw the real magic was from the strategies the coaches laid out play after play.

8:55 in the first quarter the Phoenix break out for a 24 yard run and the first touch down of the game. The extra point was good and the game is on. 7:00 left in the fist quarter the Queens go for the long bomb 65 yards and a touch down of their own. They go for the extra point, which is blocked to the ground, there is a scramble to make the sudden improvised conversion, and that is stopped inches from the goal.

After that the Queen's defense adapts and makes things rough for the Phoenix offense. Its a back and forth battle of move and counter move. The quarter ends Phoenix 7 Queens 6. As a fencing coach, this started to make sense to me. We have a saying in fencing, "if it works keep doing it until it stops working". We would see a play work once, twice, but seldom three times. 8:38 in the second the Queens receive a punt at seventeen yard line. On the first play they go for the short pass but the Phoenix intercept and run it for a touch down, the extra point is good, and the Phoenix lead 14-6.

Later in the second quarter the Phoenix can't seem to get their passing game together, pass after pass to the grass. The Queens try out a passing game of their own, and it is found lacking also. The Queens did make one completion though, to the Phoenix, who fumble it back two plays later.

The score is 14-6 at the half. The halftime show was brought to us by the Triad Rattlers' Venom dance team. Many thanks to the ladies of the Venom. Each home game this season there is a drawing for a chance to kick a 40 yard field goal into the bed of a truck courtesy of Michael Jordan Nissan. The lucky winner of the drawing made an outstanding effort, but too low, and too short to drive the Titan home.

Just as the Phoenix are returning from the locker room I watched a lone white dove fly across the field. I took it as a good omen for the Phoenix.

9:37 in the 3rd quarter the Queens make a touch down using their running game, the extra point was no good and a hush filled the stands as the Phoenix lead drew to within two point.

This would not do for the Phoenix, however. 5:31 in the 3rd the Phoenix find a weakness in the Queens defense and exploit it for another touchdown, extra point is good, score is now Phoenix 21 Queens 12.

2:35 in the 3rd the Phoenix intercept a pass and make a run to the 50 yard line. Could the Queens spirits be broken? Nope, as if in reply the Queens start exploiting a weakness in the Phoenix, and the momentum swings once again in the Queen's direction.

3:14 left in the 4th Phoenix around the 30 yard line. 4th and 8, the Phoenix decide to go for it. The Queens decide to go for it too, they strip the ball and make a thrilling run for it. But no one in the IWFL is as fast as what the Phoenix brings. In the words of Mark Tebault it was like watching a nature show. The Queens gazelle is ruthlessly rundown by the Phoenix cheetah. Nom Nom Nom. They get as far as the 45 yard line.

1:37 left in the game the Queens are on the 5 yard line and it looks like nothing in the world can stop them from the inevitable touch down. Nothing in the world that is except the Phoenix defense! 4 carries later the ball is on the seven and it belongs to the Phoenix.

Game ends Carolina Phoenix 21 Carolina Queens 12.

Afterwards both teams went to the Blue sports bar and grill at the Durham Hilton where there had been an agreement made in advance to keep the kitchen open for the two hungry teams. I don't know who dropped the ball at the Hilton, but my dinner consisted of a single slice of Papa Johns. It is my own humble opinion that no matter how perfect a place might be, if they can't fulfill your needs, you need to move on.

Ah crap. I'm in Durham. Its 12:29am and I have a fencing tournament to run in Greensboro in seven and a half hours. Congratulations Phoenix, but I've gotta get this, and me, to bed.

IWFL Phoenix VS Thunder

After helping with the fencing tournament on Saturday, I had to leave early to go do my other thing, being a part time shooter and full time fan for the Carolina Phoenix. This was the Phoenix's first home game in Durham Stadium. It was also their first game in their own spiffy new black uniforms, and with a full roster of players.

I arrived to find a tailgate party already in progress. This warmed the cockles of my heart. You've made it as a spectator sport when you attract tailgaters. By game time there were about two hundred in the stands, some of them even brought more cowbell. I got in, got checked in, was issued my volunteer badge and was looking for the video camera I was going to be shooting with when it was revealed that no video camera had been arranged. That just meant that I could attempt to take better notes and practice my still camera work. The reality was that I just took, more notes, not better notes and one shouldn't attempt to take still photos and copious notes at the same time. Both suffered for it.

But enough about me. Lets talk football!

The game had two halves and the Carolina Phoenix owned the first one. The Phoenix received from the Thunder and scored on the first possession with 9:42 in the first quarter on a 13 yard pass. In fact in the first half the Phoenix had no turn overs and scored on every possession.

Here's a highlight: Thunder has possession and has to punt (The Thunder failed to make a single first down in the entire first half), 13:22 in the 2nd quarter the wind catches the punt and takes it high but not far. The ball falls pretty flat and doesn't bounce much. I watch the Phoenix player who is standing in front of it (it fell at her feet) pause, shrug, pick up the ball and run it for a 70 yard touch down. For those who believe in magic, there must have been a spell cast against the Thunder. As soon as the ball was picked up two of the thunder fell over backwards. At about the 50 yard line two more thunder were in terrific position to make the stop but just before they got into striking distance they both tripped over their own feet and fell over backwards at the same time. From there it was clear sailing for the Phoenix.

By the end of the first half the Phoenix lead 34 to nothing.

The Thunder's first half was marked by failure and drama, while the Phoenix played like business as usual. I don't know what happened in the Thunder locker room during the half time but a different and much better team emerged to play the second half.

The Thunder managed two first downs and kept the Phoenix from scoring again until 6:06 in the 4th when the Phoenix ran for a 42 yard touchdown.

Final score Phoenix 40 Thunder 0.

And that's what four pages of notes got me. I know you don't care about each play and I have no idea who did what on any play so there you go.

Now for the pictures. Most in focus, none worthy of publication. I'll put up two so you don't think I'm being modest.

Carolina Phoenix Player in the News...Again

"Northeastern grad key to resurrection of women's professional football team. Team reborn as a player-owned club"

Sure, I could brag about the teams 5-1 season, and doing it all with a tiny roster, and no budget. I have done it, and I'll do it again, but not today. Today I'm going to brag about my super kick butt wife, who has been gracious enough to allow me to be her husband.

Why wouldn't I? Here's a hottie who came to UNCG with a degree already under her belt, gets an undergrad degree in theater education, in points while living in her car, and just kept on going. She's finished her masters degree in film by day while working nights. She is living proof that desire is enough, if you are willing to keep your eyes on the prize and never give up.

Currently a Project Manager in IT, it was a natural for someone who has always been accustomed to time lines, budgets, and coordinating others to see a job done well. Playing football is what brings her joy, it allows her take a break from all of that leadership and be a cog in a well oiled machine, a teammate in a team of friends and equals. Sure, she was made team delegate, a role she excels in because excelling is what she does. A small price to pay because in exchange for this, she gets to play, and playing the game brings her joy in a way words can't describe. You just have to see her face at the end of a game when she pulls her helmet off. Through the sweat, and the dirt, and the bruising, there is a glow, born of pure joy and love of the game and the team.

Yet with all of this success and joy in her life, she still takes the time to love my sorry butt, while I attempt to scrape out a meager paycheck. She's patient with my low paying job because she wants me to better myself as well by trying to balance a paying job with my own half baked dreams. It takes the patience of a saint, to stay married to a guy who answers the question, "What do you do?" with the answer, "I write, and I teach fencing." The asker always translates my answer into "Oh, you're a bum." Yeah, maybe I am a bum, but I'll bet my spouse is better than YOUR spouse. In your face haters.

My wife filmed a black poetry night last night, managed IT projects today, and tonight is working on the 48 Hour Film Project. (Nice segue huh?)
I might be a bum, but I'm one heck of a lucky one.

Carolina Phoenix defeats Cape Fear Thunder 29 - 6

The electrical system at the Fayetteville city parks and rec stadium had been struck by lightning a couple of weeks earlier and as best as I could tell there was no attempt to begin repair work on it. Therefore, the game was held at 5:30pm under the sun, with no scoreboard and no booth.

I set up the family cam in the shade of the condemned booth on the Home side so the sun would be at my back as it set. Sitting around me were a mixed bag of fans from both sides who banded together in the bond of available shade. Though the sun is hot there is a breeze and the national anthem was sung by the Teams as no one thought to bring their car into the stadium to play the CD on their stereo. Someone did remember to bring in a flag and someone son held it in the end zone. People are great adapters, and no one minded much how it was done, so long as it was done.

In the first quarter the Phoenix came on strong with a touch down, making the score 6 - 0. The extra point was no good.

In the second quarter the Phoenix does it again this time the extra point works and the score is now 13 - 0. Late in the second a safety, makes the score 15 - 0 Phoenix.

Coming back from the half the heat started to show on the Phoenix and the Thunder was allowed to get their first first down of the game. Phoenix scores again and the extra point is good making the score 22 - 0 going into the 4th.

Early in the fourth the Phoenix do it again with the extra point for 29 - 0. It was here the Thunder started to catch on to what the Phoenix was doing and they made a few good plays, gaining some yardage. Finally in what we estimate to be the last minute of play found the end zone, bring the score to 29 - 6 for the final.

Thus completes the Phoenix's first season with a record of 5 and 1. As an expansion team the Phoenix are not eligible for the playoffs, but Coach Holmes is confident you will be seeing them there next year. Next week is the end of the regular season for the regular teams and the players and coaches of the Phoenix are already planning to head to Atlanta for the IWFL national championship so they can see who they will likely be playing next year.

Carolina Phoenix Defeats Delaware Griffins 12-0

Put another mark in the "win" column.
Phoenix 12 - Delaware Griffins 0

The Phoenix are really putting the "X" in exhibition this year beating established teams left and right. I am sure that next season coach Holmes is going to be really disappointed if he doesn't get a crack at this year's championship team.
I am pretty sure they would also drive back to Shreveport on a moment's notice to make things right against the only team this year to beat them.

Phoenix Decends upon 2nd Grade

or
Sara and Woody VS the Second Grade

Sara "Tank" Cavenaugh #65 center for the Carolina Phoenix, had a problem. When her niece announced proudly that her aunt played football, several little boys in the class called her a liar, and worse they said that girls can't play football, which was odd because two girls in their class were playing Pop Warner football, and they themselves weren't.

The solution? Drive right down there with full gear and prove once and for all that her niece wasn't lying. The difficulty level was that her niece is four hours away, and Sara herself had only just returned from a 36-0 win over the Detroit Predators. So with four hours of sleep armed with a care package of an info sheet, Phoenix stickers, and little footballs, we went down there to slay the 2nd grade dragon.

How did I get roped into it? Easy, I was offered 20 minutes to talk about my sport fencing, and I had an info sheet, stickers, and Three Musketeers candy at my side to make sure things remained fair.

As a veteran of the traveling road show, I went up first, to warm them up as it were and to add to the anticipation created by a 6ft tall blond bombshell in full pads with a helmet at her side.

The #1 question we both got asked the most, "Why do you wear protection?" It is difficult to explain injury to a Power Rangers generation, but we did our best. When the day was done, the nay sayers apologized for calling Sara's niece a lier, and the Pop Warner league this fall should have a nice influx of both genders.

After nap time, (for Sara and I), we said our goodbyes, and headed four hours back to home base. Mission Accomplished.

As it turns out this story didn't end here. Sara was hit with Romper Room's Revenge, and spent a day home sick. No good deed goes unpunished they say.

Carolina Phoenix Defeats Detroit Predators 36-0

The place, Franklin High School, home of the Patriots. The game, a rematch. The Carolina Phoenix, were looking for another win, the Detroit Predators, wanted to even the score. That was the way things were as I walked across the turf field headed for my place in the booth. This time I reached down and touched the turf with my own hands. Turf looks amazingly like grass, even up close. The storms of earlier in the day, have passed and only occasional sprinkles would fall during the game. The Phoenix brought 15 players, and the Predators fielded 20.

First action of the day, 1:13 into the first quarter, 2nd play of the game, Phoenix breaks out for a 55 yard touchdown run. 8:36 into the first, they do it again from 3rd and 10, they complete a pass the touchdown is theirs, score in the first quarter 12-0 Phoenix.

In the 2nd quarter, a 70 yard touchdown by the Phoenix makes the score 18-0. Later an interception by the Phoenix gets them 47 yards, but there is a flag on the play against the Phoenix. The team taketh, but the referee taketh away. The Phoenix keep the ball but have to start back from the previous line of scrimmage. At the half the score remains 18-0.

Second half, 3:02 has elapsed and the Phoenix make the score 24-0 after a long bomb, that left the dropped every jaw in the stands.

Later, the Phoenix have the ball on the 10, and they fumble it. So did everyone else, I am pretty sure that no less than five players from both teams had their hands on the ball and no one could seem to hold on to it. The ball pretty much had to stop rolling on its own, before a Predator could take possession.

Soon enough, the ball makes its way near the Carolina end zone again, only this time its Detroit's ball and they have to punt, again with the slick ball, and lots of hands trying to pick it up. This time it was the Phoenix that got its hands on it, and they ran with it, making the score 30-0, with only 37 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

In the fourth quarter 1:31 has elapsed on the clock, Carolina lands themselves an interception and goes 40 yards to score another touchdown, the score 36-0 Carolina and that's how the game ended.

Many thanks to the Detroit Predators for being such outstanding host, and showing the Phoenix a good time after the game at Mason's. It really was the best cheeseburger in Detroit.

Stay tuned, Carolina is traveling to Delaware next week to meet the Griffins. Sadly, I won't have your highlight report, but I will let you know the score as soon as I find out myself.

Carolina Phoenix on the road tonight, Detroit waiting for a rematch.

The Carolina Phoenix are resting up and packing up for a road trip up to the Motor City where the Predators are waiting for them. When last these two teams faced, the Phoenix came out ahead, but just barely. The Phoenix are up two and down one and want another win. The Predators are down three so far and are hungry to turn it around.

Kickoff is tomorrow night at 7:00pm in Detroit. Watch this space for the recap, as soon after the game as I can find access.

Carolina Phoenix Defeats Detroit Predators

There was a nail biter in Thomasville Saturday night as the Phoenix manage to barely keep their lead defeating the Predators 19-18. Improving their wins to two, keeping their losses at one.

It was a bright and sunny afternoon, good for football and better than the wet weather last week when the Predators of Detroit, 24 strong, kicked off to the Carolina Phoenix. The Phoenix still very light in the roster with only 14 came on strong scoring three minutes and twelve seconds in the first quarter. With the score now 6-0 the Phoenix try to hold the momentum as the Predators try to rally it back their way. Twice the Phoenix stop the Predators deep in their own territory and twice they fought their way back out.

The Phoenix have to punt, shut down by the Predators defense. The Predators fumble, Phoenix recover at the 50 and immediately brings out their air force gaining 40 yards on a pass only to have it brought back by a penalty. The quarterback took matters into her own hands running it right back. 2nd and goal a Phoenix dead ball pushes them back, but it doesn't matter one short pass later and score is 12-0 with six minutes left in the first half.

Predators offense having had enough drove long and hard, scoring a touchdown of their own with 3 minutes left in the half. 12-6 Phoenix. Not to be outdone, the Phoenix complete a pass and run of their own for a 55 yard touchdown. The extra point is good and the Phoenix expand their lead to 19-6 with 1:32 in the first half.

Detroit with some fast breaks hope to put some points up before the half but time was not on their side.

Later, with 3:45 in the third quarter after a long hard and dusty drive the predators ground pounded their way drive after drive scoring their second touchdown of the evening making the score Carolina 19, Detroit 12.

In the fourth quarter the Phoenix short roster took its toll, with a constant flow of fresh players Detroit took the momentum and drove with it. The Predators defense came on hard and fast with four sacks in a row driving the Phoenix offense back easily 40 yards. The Phoenix defense having to work really hard to keep the Predators from advancing.

Two minute warning sounds, the ball is on the 35 yard line, 3rd and 12 for the Predators, huge Predator play makes the score 18-19. A two point conversion is all that is needed to take the lead from the Phoenix and the win it for the Predators.

Friends, I am honestly not sure what I saw through the 2X2 inch family cam view screen, but it was fast, hungry and wearing a Phoenix jersey. The Detroit QB didn't know what was either but it sacked them flat! That right there was the play that sealed the deal for the Carolina Phoenix winning their second game in a row 19 -18, and guaranteeing the rematch in Detroit in two weeks is not to be missed!

Carolina Phoenix Defeats Cape Fear Thunder

There was electricity in the air of Cushwa stadium in Thomasville Saturday night as the Carolina Phoenix in their first home game of the season improved their IWFL record to 1 and 1 with a 13 - 6 win over the Cape Fear Thunder.

Thunder won the coin toss and the Phoenix kicked off. On the second play of the game the Phoenix forced a fumble and takes possession. Speaking of Thunder and electricity in the air, Thomasville brought some of their own and the game was postponed as the skies fell and the lightning crashed. It ended as quickly as it began and 20 minutes later play resumed.

Phoenix got close to scoring but a pair of penalties pushed them back, they go for a pass and the Thunder intercepted and took the ball back. The Phoenix forced a second fumble and took possession again. Phoenix had trouble getting their passing game together and were forced to punt to the Thunder. Phoenix forced a third fumble and make a nice run out of it. The first quarter ended scoreless.

With 6:06 in the second in a huge play the Phoenix scored an interception. In a see-saw battle the Phoenix lost big yardage but gained it all back and put six on the scoreboard with a pass and run for 40 yards with 3:41 left on the clock. Not to be outdone the Thunder forced a fumble of their own on the Phoenix. The Thunder scooped it up and ran for a game tying touchdown of their own with only 42 second left in the first half.

Coming back from the half, a foiled Phoenix punt (say that three times fast) set the Thunder up for a touchdown but the Phoenix had other plans, they forced a fumble but couldn't get it back, and the Thunder just couldn't push past the Phoenix defense. Later in the third a Thunder blitz puts the Phoenix quarter back down, she left the field on her own power but sat the next several plays out. Later on a Phoenix punt, the Thunder fumbled and the Phoenix recovered in a seat clearing play. The stands on both sides went wild, and they stayed wild when the Phoenix completed a long bomb gaining critical yardage. The next Phoenix pass was incomplete and a Thunder member limped off of the field with an injury. A second pair of Phoenix penalties lost critical yardage and a Thunder interception threatened to take the Phoenix momentum. Though the battle fought back and forth neither team could make any headway and the 3rd quarter ended with a tie, 6-6.

Coming into the forth, the Thunder rallied with some good rushing yards bringing them back into scoring range but they couldn't manage to push passed the Phoenix defense to score. 5:07 on the clock Phoenix way back on their own 10 yard line. A pass interference call against the Thunder gained the Phoenix 10 yards. On the next play the quarterback snuck 40 yards upfield, turned around and on the next play gained another 15 yards. 3:34 on the clock Phoenix was on the 20 and in good scoring distance. They do just that with a beautiful pass strait into the end zone for a touchdown, extra point was good and the score was then Phoenix 13, Thunder 6.

Thunder feeling the pressure pushed back with a long hard drive way deep into scoring territory, but a critical fumble was recovered by the fired up Phoenix defense with only 34 seconds remaining on the clock. Game ends Phoenix 13, Thunder 6, and the fog of the Thomasville night rolled in.

Many thanks to Thomasville rescue squad and police department for being on hand, and to the city of Thomasville for renting the field to the Phoenix. Thomasville is a terrific town and a great place to watch football. Come see for yourself next week (May 19th) 7pm, same place when the Phoenix host the Detroit Predators. Tickets are only $5.00 but worth so much more.

Carolina Phoenix Center Donates to Locks of Love

Sara AKA "Tank" donated her long hair in anticipation of the season opener against the Shreveport Aftershock. Leon's on Tate street did the honors for the worthy cause, "Locks of Love".

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Sara said this was the third time donating to this organization. She said it takes two years to grow her hair long enough to make a good donation and still leave her with a comfortable amount of hair left over. Doing this before the Carolina Phoenix season opener seemed like perfect timing. Her hair was ready for shearing, and she would be much more comfortable in her helmet with a shorter do. So how does it look? See below and judge for yourself!

Carolina Phoenix VS Shreveport Aftershock: Season Opener

Disclaimer: I am not a sports reporter. I have never really read any sports journalism. I am attempting to write about a sporting event I know amazingly little about. Be kind.
Over the weekend our very own Carolina Phoenix drove down 16 hours to Shreveport Louisiana to face off against the Shreveport Aftershock. The game was played at Independence Stadium, home of the Independence Bowl. Yes, that stadium, yes, that Bowl game. The Mayor of Shreveport, came out welcoming everyone to the IWFL season opener. Two IWFL executive council members were on hand, and even Carl "The Mailman" Malone was there enjoying the action.
The Phoenix is what is called an "X Team", a designation given to newer teams that don't yet have the player base, fan base, or sponsorship of other more established teams. In order to help prove themselves and earn street cred with the league, the teams, and the fans, the Phoenix has accepted several long range away games, of these Shreveport is one of the first. The team left Greensboro 8pm Friday night, drove through the night and were ready to play by 7pm Saturday night.
The Aftershock, being a more established team had a roster of twenty-six, a great stadium and four well dressed coaches. They were terrific hosts and the thirteen members and two coaches of the Phoenix would be happy to go back and play any time.
At the kickoff the Phoenix started with eleven on the field and two in reserve. They kept the ball deep in Aftershock territory even after two injuries on the line weakened the tight Phoenix defense. The Phoenix would spend most of the rest of the game with only 10 defenders on the field. The Phoenix defense errors always seem to come in threes and at the end of the first quarter the Aftershock slipped past and put six on the board. Their attempt at a two point conversion was stopped cold at the line of scrimmage, by the short handed Phoenix defense.
Late in the second quarter was a repeat of the first, three defensive errors by the Phoenix coupled with a strong offensive push put the Aftershock up 12 - 0. Again they went for the two point conversion, and again they were stopped cold just before halftime by an understaffed Phoenix defense.
Coming back from Halftime the Aftershock returned the kickoff for a touchdown bringing the score to 18 - 0, but the Phoenix didn't seem to notice. Their spirit could not be broken, even when another of their players went down. With six minutes left in the third the Aftershock score again, and again Carolina stops the extra point attempt. The score 24 - 0. Most teams at this point would likely have had morale problems, but the Phoenix were not phased. Even with half the roster of the Aftershock, they were playing twice as well as their previous season, and you could see their smiles from the stands.
In the forth quarter the Phoenix completes a great pass and runs 40 yards for a stand clearing touchdown, only to have it brought back for unclear reasons. Too late however, the Phoenix had tasted a touchdown and they would not be denied, scoring in the very next play. The final score, 24 - 6 Aftershock, and the promise of great things to come from the Carolina Phoenix.

I am pleased to announce that the iwfl has announced the welcome of the Carolina Phoenix. They have risen from the ashes with a model based on distributed ownership. All for one, and one for all.

I have heard that the team deligate to the league is a force to be reckoned with in her position on the team as center.

I have also heard that they are actively seeking players for the team. If you or someone you know are female, over the age of 18, and interested in playing football, contact them at carolinaphoenix at gmail.com I have placed a link on my sidebar for the iwfl where you can keep up with rosters, schedules, outcomes, and swag. If you know ways the team might be able to raise money for equipment and league fees, please email them.

I am thinking of how to put together a superfan costume me to wear at Phoenix games that won't end up making me look like a drag queen. Rule #1 I am not going to use feathers. Not even orange and red ones.

Carolina Phoenix Women's Football Update

This just in:

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL WANTED: A FEW GOOD WOMEN TO PLAY FOOTBALL And we aren’t talking powder-puff, either. We’re talking full tackle, full contact, bone-crunching American football. The Carolina Phoenix team (seeking membership in IWFL) is currently seeking new recruits. Interested but not 100% sure? Excited and screaming “hell yeah!”? Then come to one of our Organized Team Activities. 10am on October 29th and November 12th at the Glenwood Recreation Center on Coliseum Blvd. Come ready to play with us or just observe. This is not a try out – all women are invited to come and experience this so that they can make an informed decision about trying out. No equipment necessary for the OTAs - we’ll be running plays, but not bashing heads - yet. Questions? Contact the team at carolinaphoenix (at) gmail.com

From the ashes they rise again, better than ever.

I highly recommend that even mildly interested folks come out and give your support.
