Surprise Shiso

| 105 Comments | No TrackBacks
I had nearly given up on growing shiso this year.  I've already planted two batches of seeds.  One was left to germinate in the dark with the veggies, the other was exposed to light with the flowers. Nope. No luck.

Some quick online research informed me that shiso seeds don't really keep well.  My particular batch was the among the first seeds I bought when I began my great gardening adventure last year.  I bought those seeds even before I bought the yard to garden in!  I also wasn't very particular about where I stored the packet of seeds.  I figured that my shiso seeds were past their expiration date, and ordered another batch.

Today I was out on the back deck, checking on the garlic.  I miscalculated all sorts of things about the garlic I planted last fall, the most bothersome one being that I planted it right in the middle of the garden where I needed to plant the mustard in the spring.  I dug up the garlic and replanted it in a series of pots that sat undisturbed on the deck after the annuals that lived in them last year succumbed to winter.  The transplanted garlic seems to be doing OK, amazingly enough.  But what really amazed me was the shiso seedlings that are growing wild in the flowerpots.

I managed to get one shiso plant to grow from seed and live to planthood last year.  It shared a pot that's about a foot and a half in diameter with some lamb's ears.  (The lamb's ears are still there.)  It grew to be a very healthy two foot tall plant.  I didn't know that usually people pinch the flowers off of basils (I also neglected to do this to last year's tulsi), so the shiso went through its whole lifecycle with very little interference from me.  Today, that paid off.  There are around 20 little shiso seedlings peeking out of the pots that were clustered around last year's big pot. Yay!

I wandered through the veggie garden today to check on the mustard and the potatoes.  The mustard still seems pretty happy.  There's no sign of the potatoes yet after four days.  I also noticed that the carrots are finally sprouting!  I think.  I know I planted carrots there, and some of the things sprouting look kinda carrot-y.  I'm having a similar identification problem with the chard and chrysanthemum greens (aka crown daisy, shungiku) rows - stuff is sprouting in the rows, but I can't tell what yet.  I know that time will tell, but it does make weeding a lot more difficult.

As far as I know, the Fifty-One Duo is a re-branded E9 or KR808D-2 model, so you can look for compatible cartomizers like these from Vapor Kings. Please note that the 2 in KR808D-2 is important, as there is also a more common KR808D-1 that is not compatible.

Perhaps it should be added which the inspiring factors that want doing now include genuine science unmanned missions for instance the Mars mission Curiosity although not manned missions.

Apple now cute blue mittens free has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. Between me cute blue mittens free and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Having Andrew as our first Farmer Scholar is the worst representation of this school that I could find. He uses and abuses girls all the time, lies, smokes pot, and drinks underage. Personally, I would hope our school could find a better person to act as a role model for our school. I have no idea how someone as vain, stupid, and egotistical as him could have beat out the competition for this scholarship. He didn't even receive very good high school grades or SAT scores. I hope the future Farmer Scholars have better morals, are more intelligent, and do not follow in his footsteps.

I don't think so export license is required for charity products. You are helping others not selling.

I need to figure out instagram.

I am an enumerator and I am being pushed to produce more than is possible. I am encouraged to use the Internet to get information instead of visiting homes. Doing this will get a big bonus for someone over me, but I will be out of work sooner! It's not just bad enumerators, people, it's bad supervisors trying to get bonuses.

I assume that the amount of seats that Florida should have in the House of Representatives will be for the next election in 2011. What happens if our Florida count is down and the conclusion is that we are entitled to less seats and we have a person serving in a district that has been reduced? Does that person finish his term of service or is it shortened? Only a thought.
Firther.....In the preliminary stats you have received how did Florida do and especially how did Seminole County do? I beleive that in one of your reports you stated that we were above the last Census? Am I corect?

Very interesting stats. I follow "ted.com" and learned there that China has more english speaking people than does the United States. The latino population is the fastest increasing in the United States.

I worked last summer for the census and I have not been mailed a W-2. Can you tell me how I can obtain this important document so that I can file my tax return?

No mention of Greek, which existed in more or less its current capitals from around 700 BC, if not a bit earlier? Sure there were some extra letters here and there, but not too many.

(Written for the 10 year anniversary and shared with the members of the Molloy College community at the September Concert on 9/12/11)Reflections on 9/11/01September 11, 2001 was a bright, blue sunny day. The day before, September 10th, we had hosted on the front lawn of Molloy, a national press conference announcing a new national initiative to fund scholarships for nursing students. Excited about the prospect of some national recognition for Molloy, I sat in my office the morning of 9/11 awaiting word of the press coverage of that event, but word never came. Instead, Ann popped her head in my office to tell me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Like most individuals at that time, I thought it was a small plane that had hit the building by accident. Minutes later came word of a second plane hitting the second tower. I now knew it was no accident. I went out into the hall. At that time, at each end of the main hall of Kellenberg by the mosaics, were hung small TVs from the ceiling. Students, faculty, staff, all members of the Molloy community were clustered around looking up at the TVs in silence. Here, I watched the first tower fall. Inside the boiler room of Kellenberg, I turned on the PA system that had not been used for decades, and spoke to the Molloy community. We set up a counseling room in the Reception Room. We canceled classes and assembled behind Kellenberg Hall in Cedar Grove to pray. In the late morning, I received a call from Mercy Medical Center. "We need your nursing faculty and nursing students to be ready to help us when we receive the wounded from the city," I was told. "We'll call you to let you know when we will need them." When the call never came, I knew the extent of the tragedy had been catastrophic.A month later, we gathered in front of Kellenberg Hall by the flag pole to honor the fallen. It had been a time of unbridled patriotism and an outpouring of mutually held grief and solidarity. I would like to read a poem that I had written for this occasion:In Memory of HeroesThere were no flags to be found
Only patriotism in every town.
We came to honor heroes from the war
From the city not from foreign shore.
In our halls stood alone the tattered prayer book
Lined with names for each passerby to look.
We met, we hugged, we stopped to talk
And in this way, we began again to walk.
We defined anew what lay in our soul
Our families, friends, and freedom's role.
Take heed the 200 flags newly found
For where they are now planted is holy ground.
(from 10/11/01 Memorial Service)What I have learned since 9/11/01 is that there is a resiliency of the human spirit and it is that resiliency that we honor today in remembrance of September 11th.

It appears that the census takers did not make as many contacts in the rural areas as in the past. One way to check this is by counting the number of personal contacts this census vs the last one. As you have indicated there may not have enough resources to do it this time. Only you have this information which would prove your effort was the same as last time. Lloyd

I like this website very much so much great information.

Amazing blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I'm planning to start my own blog soon but I'm a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I'm completely confused .. Any tips? Thank you!

You can be unhappy about it, but you have no right to be angry about it

Doubling up counted by including a 18 year old not in school? So if your child is 17 one month and 18 the next, then this is a doubled up household? What was the trend in this for the nonrecession periods? Pretty strange definition.

OMG. Amazing and hilarious. I am always inspired by other artists. But, I don't think I will be doing this anytime soon.

So, is anyone writing a letter to the editor pointing out this confusion? A slight revision of the part between the quote from Acocella and Rickford sent by a member of the AHD usage panel would stand a reasonable chance of getting in. nudge nudge wink wink.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hrmm that was weird, my comment acquired eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it's nice to understand that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding precisely the same info elsewhere. This was the very first location that told me the answer. Thanks.

It seems like you happen to be creating issues oneself by looking to clear up this issue rather of looking at why their is really a issue to begin with

Congrats on the move! It was a long time coming. Hope to see it soon!

In order to achieve some of these goals, and in addition to the collection of U.S. Postal Service data, the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program should be implemented every year instead of every ten years. Annual local updates of census addresses will help to improve the spatial future database. As a result, a second address canvassing operation won't be necessary for the next decennial census.

I am very glad to see Doug is wearing his name tag! I advocate nametag use at all times! Glad you are safely on the ground.

There is noticeably a bundle to know about this. I assume you made certain nice points in features also.

Keep 'em coming... you all do this kind of a wonderful career at this kind of Concepts... can not tell you how a lot I, for a single appreciate all you do!

This blog is good that I can’t take my eyes off it.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Saving this for later so I remeber to come back to it :)

It seems like you are making issues by yourself by trying to solve this concern as a substitute of looking at why their is a problem in the first place

Hi there, I just wanted to tell you, I enjoyed this article. It actually was helpful. Keep on publishing!

I totally agree with you. Same here, received, filled out, and mailed back, today we get another as a reminder? A terrible waste of money as far as I am concerned. Of course we all know who pays for the waste, right?

Will there be an open source publishing of your code or parts of your code?

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

You will be an ocean of understanding, otherwise how is it feasible to compose and express your opinion on each and every subject so effortlessly. Bow before you!

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

You might have an extremely good layout for the website, i want it to utilize on my web page also .

thank you for sharing, I does add to GOOGLE READER your website

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I enjoyed reading your blog! It helped me understand the world of Export from the Foreign Trade point of view:) Good job, can't wait to read your next post.

I just saw this yesterday in a student's paper, in praise of a character: "She is a dime in a dozen."

I totally agree with you. Same here, received, filled out, and mailed back, today we get another as a reminder? A terrible waste of money as far as I am concerned. Of course we all know who pays for the waste, right?

I agree with this idea. College students are an important faction of the population who may not be counted in the upcoming census. I think that all states should follow the example of the Ohio Complete Count Committee. Alerting college students through their email service is an effective way of getting them to participate in the census. I also think the idea the Boston census office proposed is an inventive way of getting students to participate in the census. I think that universities should offer some form of incentive to increase student participation in the census, such as discounted sporting event or concert tickets; something that would interest college students and incite them to take the time out to fill out the census. I also think that some census offices and colleges may look to social networking sites to reach out to students. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and Youtube are reliable ways to reach a large audience of college students. Creating a Facebook group or page or a Youtube video encouraging students to fill out the census are only some examples of how these sites can be used. College students frequent social networking sites, and using them can also be more effective than email because some students may disregard mail concerning the census as "spam". Hopefully, more census committees will keep college students in mind to ensure that the best representation of the population is counted in the upcoming census.

Thanks for the facts, I rarely come across what I’m seeking for… lastly an exception!
